Broken Citizenship: Hans J. Massaquoi’s Survivor Memoir and Its Literary Influence
Sarah Phillips Casteel is Professor of English at Carleton University, where she is cross-appointed to the Institute of African Studies and the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture. She holds a doctorate from Columbia University and is the recipient of a Polanyi prize as well as a Horst Frenz prize. She has published articles in such journals as Callaloo, Contemporary Literature and Holocaust Studies and is the author of two monographs, Second Arrivals: Landscape and Belonging in Contemporary Writing of the Americas (U of Virginia P, 2007) and Calypso Jews: Jewishness in the Caribbean Literary Imagination (Columbia UP, 2016), which won a Canadian Jewish Literary Award. Her current book project is a study of literary and visual representations of Black victims of the Nazis.
